Bangladesh: Hindu married woman tortured and murdered in her home by Islamist

Mohammad Noyon Islam barged into the home of Hindu married woman Ashadevi Mohant, a paramilitary personnel and brutally strangulated her with a scarf. Ashadevi, who was in-charge of security arrangements for a nearby Durga Pujo Mandap was thrashed, tortured and killed because she resisted Mohammad Noyon’s rape attempt on her. Her lifeless body was later discovered by her husband and family in their home.

This heinous act highlights the increasing audacity of Islamists in Bangladesh in targetting Hindu women, including married ones, with no regard for law or human decency. Rapes, physical assaults, harassment and murders of Hindu women occur everyday, with Islamist perpetrators acting without any fear of consequences due to systemic discrimination and societal apathy. Victims and their families never get justice, deepening their suffering.

This impunity, surrounding the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh reflects a troubling failure on the part of society and state. Hindu minorities face persistent violence in Islamic Bangladesh, with absolutely no help from law enforcement agencies.
